Hashdex Closes $14.7 Million Bitcoin ETF: What Happened?
Goodbye DEFI!
In a shocking twist of events, Hashdex has decided to pull the plug on its $14.7 million Bitcoin ETF. Yep, you heard that right! On August 3, they announced that the trading orders were officially over, leaving the remaining shareholders twiddling their thumbs, eagerly waiting for a cash payout instead of an exchange exit. The last day of NYSE Arca trading for the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, affectionately labeled DEFI, was on August 17, and it stopped accepting creation orders on the same day. Talk about a dramatic goodbye!
And Then There Were None
Hashdex cited various reasons for this closure, including a “let’s just say, not-so-grand” operational outlook. They took stock of their asset base, trading liquidity, and the good ol’ cost of operations. Spoiler alert: it didn’t look great. Those hopeful investors holding on to DEFI can now kiss their liquidity goodbye, as they will have to settle for a cash distribution based on whatever their shares are worth during liquidation.
What’s Going On in the Bitcoin World?
Interestingly, this closure comes right before a surge of positivity for other Bitcoin products in the U.S. Just days later, Farside Investors spotted a hefty $189.3 million jumping into various Bitcoin ETFs, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or, as cool kids like to call it, IBIT, snagging $143.6 million of that pie. Meanwhile, Hashdex was left sitting with a mere $14.7 million under management as of July 30. Ouch!
Cash Payouts and Liquidation Drama
Now, about those cash payouts – don’t get too excited! The amount isn’t locked in at the $14.7 million snapshot as Hashdex suggested that closing costs and the unpredictable Bitcoin market could significantly alter that figure. So, it’s kind of like a game of hot potato, and you never know how much you might end up with.
The Waiting Game
As for when investors can expect their cash – that’s a bit murky. Hashdex’s official documents are giving conflicting dates, with some indicating August 28 and others leaning towards August 24. So, it’s probably best to circle late August on the calendar and maybe bring snacks while you wait!
What’s Next for Hashdex?
The unfortunate closure of DEFI – the lone wolf of the Hashdex Commodities Trust – doesn’t mean the entire ship is sinking! Hashdex confirmed that they are still managing over $200 million in other products available for U.S. investors. So, fret not, folks! There’s still hope in the crypto ocean!
The Crypto Buzz
In other news, Bitcoin has been riding a wave of good vibes, up by 5.44% in the last 24 hours and holding onto its glorious throne as the number one cryptocurrency by market cap. Onward and upward!
And don’t forget, if you’re getting all hot and bothered about crypto trades – remember it’s a high-risk activity. Do your homework, and for heaven’s sake, don’t go in blind! Until next time, keep it quirky and liquid!
